Take 5! Contest: The Importance of Physical Activity in Reducing Tobacco Use

Active___Free_Logo_Adapted from CAAWS
Young women at risk for both tobacco use and inactivity share many features, and the literature demonstrates a significant association between inactivity and smoking initiation. Recent evidence suggests that physical activity ought to be an integral part of tobacco cessation interventions and programs. In an effort to promote physical activity as a viable alternative to smoking, the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport (CAAWS) has launched a new contest: Take 5! Coaches can play a part in supporting their efforts by sending a letter to the parents of their athletes. Click here to download the sample letter and Click here to learn more about the contest.

As a former competitive paddler, Graeme Lind made the transition from athlete to coach in an effort to stay involved in the sport he loves.  For the past seven years Graeme has been coaching at the Rideau Canoe Club in Ottawa working with athletes in Sprint Canoe/Kayak.  Graeme is an “enthusiastic and committed coach.  He has a great attitude and knowledge of the sport,” claims the Rideau Canoe Club president.

This past winter Graeme ran the winter dry land training program for the club.  This was not an easy tasks, as the club house was closed and under renovations for several months.  With enthusiasm, Graeme took on the challenge of finding a training facility for a team of 45 developmental level athletes.  These athletes compete provincially, nationally and internationally.  Graeme is currently working with a group of 12-15 male kayakers between the ages of 16 and 19, as well as coaching dragon boat and war canoe (14 person canoes).
