The Coaches Association of Ontario received more than 350 applications as the grant continues to support funding in community sport across Ontario

TORONTO, Ontario – September 29, 2026 – Today, the Coaches Association of Ontario (CAO) and Hydro One Inc. (Hydro One) announced the recipients of the 2026 Community Coaching Grant.

The 53 grant recipients will receive up to $1,000 each to support initiatives including equipment purchases, safety training and coaching education. More than 350 applications from coaches and sport organizations across the province were submitted, underscoring the continued need for funding in community sport.

“Coaches are at the heart of community sport, giving their time, energy and resources to help participants realize their full potential on and off the field,” said Jeremy Cross, Executive Director, Coaches Association of Ontario. “Investing in coaches and community sport is essential to recruiting and retaining the volunteers who make sport possible. The grant helps reduce some of the financial barriers coaches and organizations face, providing access to resources that support safe, inclusive and accessible sport experiences. We’re proud to support this year’s recipients and the important work they’re doing in communities across Ontario.”

For many coaches, supporting a team or sport program comes with significant out-of-pocket costs. One in seven Ontarians are actively coaching, with more than 70 per cent participating as unpaid volunteers. The Community Coaching Grant helps ease some of that financial pressure, allowing coaches and organizations to access the tools and resources they need to create safe, positive and inclusive sport experiences where athletes can thrive. Since its launch in 2021, Hydro One has funded more than $250,000 to support more than 76 communities for coaches and sport organizations to invest in safe, inclusive and accessible sport environments.

The Community Coaching Grant is a key component of Safe Sport 101, a partnership between Hydro One and the CAO, which was established in 2020. The online virtual hub provides coaches with practical tools, e-learning and downloadable resources to help create sport environments that are safe, fun and inclusive for everyone.
