Session Description

When the team qualifies for the Games, we will feel like we’ve achieved our goal

I just want to shave a few minutes off my athlete’s time, then we will have made it to where we want to be

Once we win the tournament, we will be happy with ourselves as a team

Have you ever caught yourself saying something like this to your teams, athletes or even yourself? And then finding that once you achieve your goal, you don’t feel as accomplished as you thought you would.

You may be experiencing the phenomenon known as Arrival Fallacy, or the belief that attaining a goal will provide contentment.  Join Dr Brent Macdonald, psychologist and associate professor at Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary, as he unpacks the idea of Arrival Fallacy and helps you reimagine motivation for yourself and your athletes. This eye-opening session will give you techniques you can use with your athletes to ensure everyone’s happiness is not solely based on achieving the next Big Goal, but instead the journey of getting there and the overall enjoyment of sport and competition.
